Soul Cores became much more interesting in Path of Exile 2 0.5.5. The update added 17 new Soul Cores, changed several existing effects, and made Trial of Chaos a much more focused source for both Currency and Soul Cores. For players building a new character, the important question is no longer simply which core has the biggest number. It is which one actually fits your build and which socket gives you the most value.
Start With the Cores That Match Your Main Skill
The easiest upgrades to understand are the new Jiquani Soul Cores. Several of them give +1 level to Skill Gems with a specific tag, including Totems, Curses, Marks, Warcries, Heralds, Strikes, Novas, Slams and Grenades.
These are excellent choices when your main damage skill matches the required tag.
For example, a Totem build should look for Jiquani’s Soul Core of Automation, while a Grenade-focused character can use Jiquani’s Soul Core of Munitions. Slam builds can target Jiquani’s Soul Core of Quaking, and Strike builds have Jiquani’s Soul Core of Severing.
These cores belong in weapons, so check your weapon sockets before planning the rest of your setup.
Armour Cores Should Solve a Real Problem
The four new Atziri Soul Cores work differently. They are tied to specific armour slots and scale with the number of Corrupted Items you have equipped.
Atziri’s Soul Core of Devotion belongs in a Helmet and increases Spirit based on your Corrupted Items. Alacrity goes in Gloves and improves Skill Speed, while Inoculation goes in Boots and provides Chaos Resistance. Vitality belongs in Body Armour and increases Maximum Life.
These are not leveling pieces. Their effects become much more attractive once your character already has a serious Corrupted gear setup. They are also Socket-bound, so think carefully before putting one into an item.
Build a Simple Core Setup First
Do not try to collect every rare Soul Core before upgrading your character.
A practical early setup should have one offensive core that directly supports your main skill, followed by defensive or utility cores that solve your weakest stat.
For example, a melee character might prioritize a weapon core that improves its main attack, then use armour sockets to improve survivability. A caster can do the same with a matching spell-tag core while using the remaining sockets for defenses.
This approach also saves POE2 Currency, because you are not constantly replacing cores just because another one looks slightly better.
Use Trial of Chaos to Build Your Collection
Trial of Chaos is now the most natural place to farm Soul Cores. Completed runs focus their rewards on Currency and Soul Cores, while every room provides a reward chest.
That makes farming much more straightforward. You can run safer rooms when your character is still developing and push deeper once your damage and defenses improve.
The level 50 named Soul Cores, including the new 0.5.5 additions, are tied to higher-level endgame Trial content, so do not expect every useful core to appear during early progression.
Do Not Waste Rare Cores on Temporary Gear
One of the biggest mistakes with Soul Cores is treating them like ordinary Runes.
Some cores cannot simply be removed and reused. Replacing a socketed core can destroy the old one, while the new Atziri cores have even stronger restrictions because they are Socket-bound.
If your weapon is still something you expect to replace soon, keep the valuable core in your stash.
It can be better to spend resources on buy Path of Exile 2 Orbs for a proper upgrade and save the Soul Core until you have a weapon or armour piece worth keeping.
A Practical Priority List
For most players, the order should be simple:
- Match a Soul Core to your main skill.
- Put weapon-specific cores into your main weapon.
- Use armour cores to fix your weakest defense.
- Save Atziri cores until your Corrupted gear setup is ready.
- Avoid stacking cores that your build cannot fully benefit from.
- Keep rare cores until you have permanent endgame gear.
The strongest Soul Core setup is rarely the one with the most expensive pieces. It is the one where every socket has a clear purpose.
In 0.5.5, Trial of Chaos makes collecting these upgrades much easier, but the final step is still up to the player: understand your build first, then choose the core that actually makes it better.
